Two prominent Islamorada artists, Pasta Pantaleo and Taylor Hale, have joined forces to create a unique collaborative painting titled "Before the Light." The 40-by-60-inch artwork captures a scene inspired by the iconic Alligator Reef Lighthouse and the historic USS Alligator shipwreck.

A Unique Collaboration

The collaboration brings together Pantaleo, known for his vibrant, impressionistic underwater scenes and depictions of marine life, and Hale, recognized for his more realistic and serene cloudscapes and ocean vistas. The resulting painting, unveiled to an enthusiastic crowd, features calm, realistic clouds and ocean surfaces above, transitioning to Pantaleo's characteristic dynamic and colorful underwater life below.

"It’s an honor to share the canvas with Pasta," Hale stated. "This idea came about a few years ago, but to finally have a chance to create it is thrilling. As I was painting my portion, I felt like I had Pasta over my shoulder cheering me on to do my best. We both inspired the best out of each other on this one, and I cannot wait for people to see."

A Tribute to Islamorada

The painting's setting is a significant Islamorada landmark, the site where the USS Alligator, an anti-slavery and anti-piracy schooner, wrecked in 1822. This event led to the reef being named Alligator Reef, and the subsequent construction of the Alligator Reef Lighthouse. Pantaleo described the location as an iconic Islamorada spot he had not previously painted, emphasizing the piece as a tribute to the community and the area they both deeply love.

"This piece is a tribute to the place that we all love so much, and the community connections that make the Keys what it is," Pantaleo commented.

The artwork is described as a "love letter to Islamorada," blending the artists' distinct styles to create an intriguing and cohesive image that reflects the natural beauty and history of the area. The painting has gained attention on social media, drawing viewers who were eager to see the combined efforts of these two well-regarded local artists.
