After two decades of dedicated service, local librarian Chris Morgan, affectionately known as "Ms. Chris," is retiring from her active role in the Florida Keys library system. Morgan has been a consistent presence, leading biweekly story hours, book clubs, and offering personalized reading recommendations that have influenced generations of young readers.

Decades of Dedication

Morgan began her tenure at the Key Largo library in 2006, following a teaching career at St. Justin Marine Academy. Her involvement with the Upper Keys youth was significant, particularly through her engaging story times. These sessions, designed for children and babies around four years old and younger, combined reading with songs and dances, creating an active and educational environment. Morgan expressed her joy in witnessing the children's development, noting, "It’s amazing to watch the young kids at storytime grow and develop, learn how to clap, sing along, stomp their feet — seeing that growth in them." She also extended her reach by visiting Key Largo School to encourage students to engage with the library's resources.

"Ms. Chris is a warm, welcoming and patient caring soul who has brought wonder and joy while inspiring imagination each time she has sat down to read a story, sing a song and prepare a craft or activity to engage the little minds who have come into the room," said Rachel Goodrich, a parent whose four daughters regularly attended story hour. Goodrich highlighted Morgan's unique ability to foster individual interests and remember each child's name, regardless of whether they were weekly attendees or seasonal visitors.

Morgan's impact extended beyond individual children, as she observed many parents and families forming lasting friendships through the shared experience of story time. In 2022, Morgan transitioned to the Islamorada library, where her retirement party was held on June 3. The event was attended by current and former story-hour families, as well as older children who fondly remembered her influence. The Key Largo Friends of the Library honored her service with a scrapbook filled with photographic memories.

A Lasting Legacy

Reflecting on her career, Morgan shared, "I’ll miss seeing the kids. Seeing their hearts and smiles, and watching them grow." She looks forward to encountering them in the community, stating, "I’ll see them out in the community, and that will be good. I look forward to that." Kimberly Matthews, county senior director of strategic planning and libraries director, acknowledged Morgan's significant contributions. "Ms. Chris has been a valued member of the library team for many years," Matthews said. "We cannot thank her enough for her dedication and service to our community. She has touched the lives of many." For those interested in local library events and news, the Keys Weekly provides ongoing coverage of community happenings.
