The Rotary Club of Key West is experiencing a notable increase in membership, particularly among individuals under the age of 30, a trend that contrasts with national declines seen by many civic and nonprofit organizations. This surge has prompted the creation of a new sub-chapter specifically for younger members, known as the Young Professionals Network (YPN).

Young Professionals Network Fosters Connections

The Young Professionals Network was created to connect and empower the next generation of local business leaders. The YPN brings together professionals aged 18 to 40 across all business and entrepreneurial fields.

Samantha Barrabeitg, a local real estate agent and a founding member of the YPN, explained that the network aims to bring together professionals aged 18 to 40 from various business and entrepreneurial sectors. The YPN meets monthly, providing opportunities for those under 40 to build meaningful connections, encourage professional development, and strengthen relationships that contribute to a robust local workforce in the Keys.

Mason Neller, another founding board member, returned to the Keys after college to start his career as a financial advisor. He recognized the importance of establishing a strong client base and local relationships for his success and understood the unique challenges young professionals face in the Keys. The concept for the network originated from Scott Oropeza, a longtime Key West Rotarian and CPA, who believed in nurturing the future of the community.

Neller views mentors like Oropeza as inspirations, noting that many of Key West's successful business leaders began by building relationships, a core principle of the YPN's mission. Alexis Guevremont, also a board member, emphasized the value of networking with driven individuals from diverse industries, highlighting the potential for learning and mutual support.

Membership in the YPN is not exclusive to Rotary members; individuals aged 40 and under are welcome to join regardless of their Rotary affiliation. Justin Nicholson, a board member, pointed out that the established business leaders within the Rotary Club serve as valuable mentors, offering insights into the dedication and time required to achieve success in Key West. He stated that these pioneers often share that their accomplishments began with them being young professionals, much like the current YPN members.

Currently, the YPN boasts over 60 members aged 40 and younger. Neller's vision is for the YPN to become a recognized and essential organization for young business professionals in the Keys, comparable to the Chamber of Commerce or Rotary. The network plans to host upcoming events such as a sandbar outing and a pickleball tournament. Interested individuals can contact Neller at [email protected] for more information about meetings and events. For more details on local news and events, visit Keys Weekly.

The growth of the YPN reflects a broader trend of engagement among younger professionals seeking to build their careers and contribute to the local economy. This initiative by the Rotary Club of Key West demonstrates a commitment to cultivating future leadership and ensuring a dynamic business environment. The organization aims to provide a platform for collaboration and professional advancement, supporting the continued vitality of the Keys.
