Anais Diaz, a resident of Plantation Key since 2008, has been recognized by Keys Weekly as their "Neighbor of the Week" for her significant contributions to the community. Diaz currently serves as the community development director for the Florida Keys Children's Shelter, a role she has held for the past year and a half.

Originally from Canada, Diaz moved to the Keys with her family during her high school years, attending Coral Shores. She was drawn to the area by a childhood dream of becoming a marine biologist, a passion that led her family to relocate to Florida. Although her initial career aspirations in marine biology did not pan out due to academic challenges, Diaz found her calling in community engagement and philanthropy.

Diaz spent 12 years working at Baptist Health, where her involvement with the not-for-profit foundation sparked her interest in fundraising and supporting children's causes. She was an active member of the Young Philanthropist Network, enjoying the process of raising funds for special projects. This experience solidified her desire to work in a field focused on helping others.

What she enjoys most about her current role is the connection she builds with people in the community and learning about the various initiatives aimed at assisting neighbors. Occasionally interacting with children at the shelter is particularly rewarding for her. Diaz expressed that while her marine biology dream didn't materialize, she discovered a fulfilling path in her current work.

Reflecting on her time in the Keys, Diaz described her overall experience as "weird" in a positive, culture-shocked way, contrasting her Canadian upbringing with the vibrant and unique atmosphere of the islands. She highlighted the presence of unusual sights, such as chickens crossing roads and crocodile warning signs in neighborhood canals, as part of the area's distinct charm.

Diaz has moved away from the Keys a few times but consistently finds herself drawn back to the community, which she describes as a primary reason for staying. The scenic views also play a significant role in her decision to remain in the island chain.

When asked about personal aspirations, Diaz mentioned her desire to master public speaking, noting that participating in Toastmasters has been beneficial. She also expressed a wish for the superpower of teleportation to save time and travel expenses.

Looking back, Diaz is most proud of the positive impact she has had on people, recalling instances where individuals from her past have expressed appreciation for her kindness. She cited Maya Angelou's quote, "People will never forget how you made them feel," as a guiding principle. She also acknowledged past regrets related to self-doubt and not speaking up for herself, but has since learned to advocate for herself with greater confidence.

Diaz's personal interests include painting, writing science fiction and poetry, working out, and reading, with the Harry Potter series being a particular favorite for its escapism. She aims to be more mindful of enjoying the present moment, reminding herself to appreciate small victories and the beauty of her surroundings, rather than solely focusing on future goals.
