Coral Isles Church in the Upper Keys has introduced a new art installation titled “Where Love Lets You In,” featuring a vibrant rainbow picket fence. This artwork serves as a public declaration of the church’s commitment to welcoming and affirming all members of the LGBTQIA+ community, according to the Keys Weekly.

Artist Amy Collier, who created the piece, stated that the intention is to make individuals feel accepted within the church. The inspiration for the fence came after the government removed a rainbow crosswalk in Key West. Collier expressed sadness over the removal of this symbol of hope and healing for the queer community, prompting her to create a similar display in her own neighborhood.

The idea to transform Collier's fence into a public art piece was proposed by Barbara Overton, a member of the church council. Overton saw it as an opportunity to visibly demonstrate the church’s dedication to being an open and affirming congregation. She emphasized the importance of showing support for vulnerable communities and extending compassion to those who may be struggling.

The materials for the art piece were sourced from Collier’s own aging picket fence. She described noticing loose and fallen pickets from her fence on the same day she agreed to create the artwork, interpreting this as a sign that the materials were being provided. Collier collected the damaged pickets, cleaned them, and used leftover spray paint to create the colorful display.

Collier explained that the use of her own fence pickets carries a message about sharing resources with those less fortunate. She noted that the wood was already deteriorating, making its use for the art project a minimal sacrifice. This act, she believes, symbolizes a commitment to generosity and mutual support.

Collier’s daughter, Claire, also a visual artist, contributed by adding two signs to the fence. One sign reads “You Are Loved,” and the other displays suicide prevention hotline numbers. This addition underscores the belief that visible signs of support can play a crucial role in saving lives within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Coral Isles Church plans to host a Pride service on June 21 at 10 a.m. to further celebrate its inclusive stance. During this service, the church will review its open and affirming covenant, aiming to challenge the notion that religious faith and LGBTQIA+ identity are incompatible. The church welcomes individuals of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions to participate fully in church life. Worship services are held every Sunday at 10 a.m., followed by lunch, and all are welcome, including pets.

The installation comes at a time when discussions about inclusivity and acceptance for the LGBTQIA+ community are ongoing. The Florida housing market is also experiencing its own shifts, with reports indicating stabilization but persistent affordability challenges, according to Florida Realtors.
