The documentary film “Unspoken Bond,” which explores the healing power of the connection between humans and animals, is set for a special screening in the Upper Keys. The film will be shown at Tavernier Towne Cinema on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m.
Local Ties to the Film
The film features Key Largo resident Nicole Navarro and her nonprofit, Pawsitive Beginnings, where foxes rescued from the fur and exotic pet trades are given permanent sanctuary while helping inspire healing in people facing trauma, addiction and emotional hardship.
The Keys' involvement in the film extends beyond Navarro and the rescued foxes. The documentary also includes appearances by exotic animal veterinarian Doug Mader and Jeanne Selander, known in the community as “Farmer Jeanne” for her past role managing the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm. The film was created and executive-produced by Jackie Ducci, an advocate for the human-animal bond and founder of the Florida-based nonprofit Human-Animal Alliance. This organization provides grant funding to Keys nonprofits, including Pawsitive Beginnings, to support animal-assisted healing initiatives.
Stories of Resilience and Healing
“Unspoken Bond” showcases three distinct stories illustrating the profound impact animals can have on human lives. In addition to Nicole Navarro's work with rescued foxes, the film follows international dressage rider Shannon Dueck as she copes with the grief of losing her Olympic hopeful horse, Angel. The documentary also features veteran Jason Gaver, whose service dog assists him in managing PTSD, isolation, and personal loss experienced after serving in Iraq.
The film is directed by award-winning filmmaker Don Hardy, whose previous work includes the Disney+ series “Pick of the Litter.” Hardy's documentaries often delve into themes of resilience, vulnerability, and the formative connections in human lives. “Unspoken Bond” aims to encourage audiences to reflect on the strength of the human-animal bond, showing how animals can serve as crucial partners in healing, fostering hope, and aiding survival.
