Aqua Nightclub, a fixture on Key West's Duval Street for many years, has officially ceased operations. The Orlando-based ownership group, Pride Holdings Group, is reportedly facing financial and legal challenges that led to the closure.

Eviction Cited as Reason for Closure

Aqua manager Brianlee Pavlicek announced the closure on July 3, stating the establishment had been evicted from its 711 Duval Street location. "I tried everything I could to help us avoid this, but it s beyond me," Pavlicek wrote in a Facebook post. The final performances by the club's in-house drag troupe, the Aquanettes, took place on July 5 to a full house.

While Aqua Nightclub's doors are now closed, the Aquanettes are set to continue their shows at the nearby Birdcage Cabaret, located around the corner. Pavlicek indicated that the Birdcage Cabaret bar will remain open, though operating hours may change. The 22 Co. bar, which was part of the larger Aquaplex complex, is unaffected by the closure as it operates under a different landlord, according to local reports.

Community Mourns Loss, Hopes for Return

The closure has prompted numerous tributes from locals and visitors who shared their memories of the popular drag bar. Many expressed sadness over the loss of a space that provided entertainment and a sense of community. Online comments highlighted Aqua's significance as a welcoming environment for many, including those in the LGBTQ+ community. One patron recalled their first night in Key West nearly 20 years ago at Aqua, emphasizing the personal connections made there.

Another tribute praised the club for entertaining both tourists and residents, and for fostering open-mindedness. "Thank you for the memories, and I hope that other young men can find their ‘home’ like I did," read one online message, reflecting on Aqua as a refuge during difficult times.

Rumors circulating via unofficial channels suggest a potential return of the club under its former ownership, though these remain unconfirmed. The future of the Key West location is uncertain, but the outpouring of support underscores Aqua Nightclub's impact on the local scene. For those seeking to stay informed on local happenings, the Keys Weekly provided initial reporting on the closure.
