Historian Corey Malcom is set to present an exploration of Monroe County's significant role in American history, coinciding with two major anniversaries. The event, titled “Monroe 203,” will commemorate Monroe County's 203rd birthday and the United States' 250th anniversary.
The free presentation will take place on Wednesday, July 1, at 6:30 p.m. in the Key West library auditorium, located at 700 Fleming St. Malcom, the lead historian at the Florida Keys History Center, will delve into the two centuries of settlement in the Florida Keys, highlighting the various industries that have shaped the island chain's development and its contributions to the nation. These livelihoods have included shipwreck salvaging, cigar manufacturing, fishing, tourism, and the presence of the Navy.
The Florida Keys History Center, situated within the Key West library, serves as a primary archive for historical documents and photographs pertaining to the Keys. The center is committed to preserving and promoting the understanding of the islands' historical, cultural, and ecological diversity. A substantial portion of the center's collection, including nearly 25,000 photographs, is accessible online. Further information and access to the collection can be found at keyslibraries.org/keyshistory.
Seating for the “Monroe 203” presentation is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees are advised to arrive early to secure a spot. The library is also a designated stop on the Key West Rides on-demand bus system, offering an alternative transportation method.
